Hatters blank Flames, advance to ASUN Semifinal

Nashville, Tenn. -- The Stetson University men's soccer team defeated Liberty University 3-0 Friday night to advance to the ASUN Championship semifinal match on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. EST.

On a 40-degree night, the Tennessee fall air did not affect the boys from Florida as Freshman of the Year Nelson Pereira got the Hatters (8-6-2) on the board in the 20'. After Pereira's goal, the Stetson back line held the Flames (7-9-0) to just two shots in the opening stanza. In the 42', Gabriel Toro tried to extend the Stetson lead but the freshman's shot was saved and the Hatters went to intermission with a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Liberty controlled much of the possession for the first 10 minutes of the half as the Flames had two shots in the 47' and another in the 54', but both saved by Stetson keeper Jacob Gruber. In the 64', after Alessandro Gabbani played a ball up to Oliver Bryneus, the All-Academic teamer outran the Liberty defender and found the bottom left corner of the Liberty net to put the Hatters up 2-0.

Later in the half, the Hatters defense continued to stymie the Flames offense as Liberty could not find the back of the Stetson net. Then in the 83', with the match all but over, Ajmeer Spengler scored an unassisted goal to put the Hatters up 3-0, sealing the win and sending Stetson to the ASUN Semifinals.

With the win Gruber recorded his fourth shutout of the year and Stetson's first ASUN tournament shutout since the Hatters blanked Jacksonville 1-0 in 2010.

The 3-0 win was the Hatters largest margin of victory in the ASUN championship tournament over the last 16 years.

"It was a very mature performance from the whole team as seen by essentially every player getting in and we executed really well," said Hatters head coach Emmett Rutkowski. "I give credit to Liberty. They changed formation and adapted really well and we had to make slight changes. They had a lot of quality in the first half, but Nelson finished really well and got us on the board. Then Oliver and Ajmeer gave us insurance. Overall, I'm just really happy."

With Friday's win, Stetson's men's soccer team advanced to the ASUN Championship semifinal match for the first time since 2019. The Hatters are set to face No.1 seed Lipscomb University at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex on Sunday, Nov. 7. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. EST.
