The 47th season of Stetson women's basketball will get underway Tuesday night when the Hatters host Johnson University – Florida at the Edmunds Center. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. in the first game of a basketball doubleheader.  The Hatter men will play Florida Memorial at 7:30 p.m.  Both games can be seen on ESPN+.

The Hatters welcome seven new players to the program this season. Four transfers and three freshmen join a strong corps of six returning veterans.

Head coach Lynn Bria, now in her 14th season with the Hatters, likes what she has seen from her squad in preseason practice.

"This group plays hard," Bria said.  "They are one of the hardest working groups I have ever had.  They also love to compete. I really think those are two great qualities to have. I really think we have a lot of versatility, we just need time to play together.  I think staying healthy is really important, because the more reps they have together, the better."

The Hatters return senior Yazz Wazeerud-Din, a second team all-conference selection last season and a preseason all-conference pick in 2021-22.  She is joined by five returning juniors - Alyssa Derrick, Maddie Novak, Jamiya Turner, Kiya Turner, and Tippy Robertson.

Among the seven newcomers are two graduate transfers, Ayanna Dublin (Northeastern) and Tatiana Streun (Portland State), both of whom are on year six of their NCAA eligibility.  With over 1000 combined rebounds in their careers, the two post players should help bolster the Hatters inside game.

"I can't say enough about our graduate transfers and what they have brought to the table," Bria said.  "They have significantly uplifted our team in a major way, especially with their leadership.  They are just at another level."

Also joining the program this season is Toledo transfer and forward Mali Morgan-Elliott, and Syracuse transfer and guard Khamya McNeal.  In addition, the Hatters welcome three true freshmen: Haley Stinebrickner (London, Ontario), Alyssa Hargrove (Huber Heights, Ohio), and Landyn Owens (Ada, Okla.)

"You will see more of an inside-outside balance this year, which is typically what we've had in the past," Bria said.  "I think we are going to be able to score in different ways.  I do think we are deeper than last year. How deep do we go? I don't know, I think that remains to be seen."

Stetson will play 14 non-conference games, including seven in a row on the road following Tuesday's home opener.  In all, the Hatters will make trips to Miami, Orlando, Houston, Greenville, Boston, and Tampa during non-conference play.

"I just really like this team," Bria said.  "They love to compete, and they get coached. I think we have a lot of pieces, we just have to keep getting better."

Tickets for Tuesday's doubleheader start at just $7.00 for general admission and can be purchased online or at the Edmunds Center box office.  Season tickets and flex plans are also available.  Stetson students, faculty and staff are free with a valid ID.
