Perry drops 25, leads Hatters to season opening win over FMU

DeLand, Fla. -- It had been 678 days since Stetson's Edmunds Center saw fans in its stands but Tuesday night against Florida Memorial, the Hatters opened the 2021-22 season and welcomed fans back with a 74-67 victory over the Lions.

The Hatters (1-0) scored the contest's first bucket as sophomore Chase Johnston hit a jumper to get Stetson on the board. At the 13:37 mark, Johnston knocked down his first triple of the game to give Stetson a 14-10 lead with 13:37 left in the half, but after a 9-0 run by the Lions (2-3), FMU took a 26-21 advantage with 7:33 remaining. The Hatters went on their own 5-0 scoring run to end the half, capped off by another Johnston trey, sending Stetson to the locker room with 40-36 edge.

Stetson began the second half at a slower pace and FMU capitalized as the Lions knotted the game at 43 apiece with 17 minutes to play. Over the next five minutes, the Hatters took a 56-45 lead after a 15-4 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from junior Rob Perry on a no-look pass from Stephan Swenson. Late in the half, the Lions made things interesting as FMU made it a three-point game, 64-61, after a layup from Gabriel Gonzalez with 2:45 left in regulation. Twenty seconds later, Perry drained another three, ultimately thwarting any comeback by the Lions and sealing the 74-67 win.

Perry led all scorers on the night with 25 points in only 22 minutes and was almost perfect at the line, going 11-for-12 in free throws. Despite only going 3-for-11 from beyond the arc, Johnston finished the night with 20 points and was 8-for-17 from the field while Swenson dished out seven assists.

"It's the first time we played in front of a crowd in a couple years. It's a little different than a scrimmage or practice," said Hatters head coach Donnie Jones. "We got a chance to get this group back together for the first time and I think there's a lot of things that we can improve on but obviously a win's a win. We'll learn from winning and I think that's much better than learning from losing."

Stetson men's basketball is back on the hardwood on Friday, Nov. 12 as the Hatters head to Atlanta, Ga. to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
