Hatters fall to Georgia Tech 77-52 in ASUN-ACC crossover

Atlanta, Ga. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team fell 77-52 at Georgia Tech Friday night in a non-conference ASUN-ACC crossover game at McCamish Pavilion.

"The speed of the game was a little faster than we're used to, but I thought our kids played hard, just some costly turnovers early on," said Hatters head coach Donnie Jones in his post game presser. "We played from behind from the tip and I felt like every time we tried to make a run and get it to 12 or 13, they made big shots."

The Hatters (1-1) played from behind immediately after the opening tip as Georgia Tech possessed the ball for 18 seconds before the Yellow Jackets Michael Devoe hit a triple to start the night's scoring. Midway through the half, Stetson trailed 21-8 as the Hatters offense could not find the basket, only going 9-for-28. Chase Johnston led the Stetson offense at halftime with nine points, going 3-for-5 from long range but by the end of the half, the Hatters trailed 39-22 heading to the locker room.

Sophomore Stephan Swenson opened the second half with a 3-pointer to give the Hatters offense a spark. By the 14:47 mark, a Christiaan Jones trey made it a 12 point game, 44-32, but Tech countered with a Deivon Smith triple to put the deficit back at 15, 47-32. The Hatters were unable to mount a comeback as the deficit remained no less than 16 the entire second half and Stetson ultimately fell, 77-52.

Johnston finished with 13 points as the sophomore went 3-for-8-from beyond the arc and Josh Smith tallied 11 points and six boards, going 5-for-9 in field goals.

"It was a good experience for our guys," continued Jones. "It was the first time we've been here for a lot of these guys. We were going to have to make shots and be hot tonight. We were going to have to win a different way and threes weren't going down for us so it was going to be hard to be able to pull the victory, but I think this atmosphere was obviously huge for us as we see the level that you've got to play at. We'll take some things from this and build from it and get ready and go play Miami."

Stetson's men's hoops team will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 17 as the Hatters travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on the Miami University Redhawks. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
