Smith's 24 not enough as Hatters fall 80-65 at Miami

Oxford, Ohio -- Forward Josh Smith recorded his first double-double of the year as the sophomore tied his career-high in points with 24 and grabbed 10 rebounds but it was not enough as the Stetson University men's basketball team fell 80-65 at Miami University Wednesday night.

Stetson faced an early deficit as the Hatters (1-2) fell behind 8-0 before Smith hit a jumper at the 15:42 mark to get them on the board. At the 9:55 mark, a Wheza Panzo 3-pointer forced a Miami timeout and capped off an 8-0 run from the Hatters as Stetson cut the RedHawks lead to just three, 15-12. The RedHawks (3-0) continued to lead the rest of the half, reaching as much as 13 by the 3:04 mark but the Hatters closed the gap by a point at the end of the half, as Stetson headed to the locker room down 38-26.

The Hatters opened the second half with possession and wasted no time as Smith hit a jumper to make it a 10-point contest, 38-28. After a Dalonte Brown layup put the RedHawks ahead 47-32 at the 17:52 mark, Stetson took a timeout and over the next six minutes, the Hatters made it an eight-point game with 11:51 left. Despite Smith's second half performance, eight points was the closest the Hatters would come as Stetson ultimately fell, 80-65.

Smith's 24 points are the second most for a Hatter this season as he went 4-for-9 from long range and tallied 14 in the second half. Wednesday night's contest was the first time this season three Hatters finished with double-digit points as Christiaan Jones tallied 12 while Rob Perry recorded 10 and grabbed six boards. Stephan Swenson recorded his third straight game with four or more assists as he finished with six on the night.

The Hatters will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 19 as Stetson concludes its three-game road trip with a visit to Lamar University. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. EST and can be streamed on ESPN+.
