Hatters top Cardinals behind Perry's game-winner

Beaumont, Texas -- With three seconds left in regulation and one second on the shot clock, junior Rob Perry knocked down a game-winning floater off an inbounds pass from Stephan Swenson to top Lamar University 60-59 in a back-and-forth contest Friday night at the Montagne Center.

With the Hatters leading 58-57, LU's Jordyn Adams connected on a jumper to put the Cardinals out in front once again, forcing a Stetson timeout. Out of the timeout, Swenson drove the lane for a layup but was blocked for a Hatters dead ball rebound. On the inbounds, Aubin Gateretse gave the Hatters a much needed screen, lifting Chase Johnston up to draw the Cardinals defender, which allowed Perry a quick look to get off the floating jumper.

The Hatters (2-2) got on the board first on a triple from Johnston and by the 13:35 mark, Stetson led 9-4, the team's first lead in the last two games. Over the next nine minutes, the Cardinals (1-3) went on an 18-3 run to take a 22-12 lead with 4:56 left in the first half. After Perry made two free throws to end the half, the Hatters cut the deficit to nine, headed to the locker room.

The second half saw a back-and-forth contest in which the Hatters overcame the nine-point deficit and eventually tied the game at 32 apiece on a Swenson 3-pointer with 14:12 left in regulation. By the 7:56 mark, LU took a 47-43 lead on a Jordyn Adams triple, but the Hatters stormed back and retook the lead at 49-47 on a Christiaan Jones layup with five minutes left. The game went back-and-forth rest of the half until Perry's late-game heroics sent the Hatters home with their first road victory.

"Very exciting," said head coach Donnie Jones. "Obviously our guys come back in the second half, and I felt we needed to match the intensity. Our bench gave us a great lift. Great effort from a lot of people and it was a great team win. [I'm] just really proud to get our first road victory."

To go along with his game-winning shot, Perry recorded his third career double-double as the Orlando native tallied 19 points and grabbed 11 boards, while adding four assists. Jones finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while Johnston had nine points and four boards.

The Stetson men's basketball team enjoys a week off before it welcomes Campbell University to the Edmunds Center as the Hatters host the Camels on Saturday, Nov. 27. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
