Hatters Open Season in Record-Setting Fashion

Stetson sets several school records including most points scored

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson opened its 2021-22 season with a bang, setting the school record for most points in a game in a 127-36 victory over Johnson University Florida Tuesday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (1-0) also set team records for most field goals (54), highest field goal pct. (.659), and most assists (36) in a game. The 91-point win was the program's second-largest-ever margin of victory, and the team's 32 steals also ranked as the second-highest total all-time.

"I am glad we got to play everybody and see some different rotations," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "I felt like we started working on some things.  I thought we shared the ball really well, we worked the shot clock and executed our offense. I still saw things we need to work on.  Our next opponent will really tell where we are."

Six different Hatters scored in double figures. Graduate transfers Ayanna Dublin and Tatiana Streun led the way with 22 points apiece.  Dublin went 11-for-12 from the floor for a .917 field goal pct.  Streun pulled down 13 rebounds for her first double-double as a Hatter.

Freshman Alyssa Hargrove scored 21 points in her collegiate debut.  She added six steals and three assists while shooting 10-for-14 from the floor.

Jamiya Turner and Mali Morgan-Elliott each scored 16 points.  Turner was a perfect 7-for-7, while Toledo transfer Morgan-Elliott was 8-for-11 overall and 8-for-8 inside the arc.

Syracuse transfer Khamya McNeal approached a triple double with 12 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and six steals.  Kiya Turner and Haley Stinebrickner each scored seven points, and Maddie Novak chipped in four.

The Hatters held a 45-10 edge on the glass and did not allow any second chance points.

Stetson's previous team record for points was 116 vs. Trinity Baptist set in 2019.

The Hatters will head to Coral Gables to face the University of Miami at 2 p.m. Sunday.
