Slow Start Costs Hatters in 65-50 Loss to Holy Cross

Yazz Wazeerud-Din hits three 3s and scores a team-high 15 points

Worcester, Mass. -- Stetson cut a 20-point deficit all the way down to six, but Holy Cross held on down the stretch for a 65-50 victory Sunday afternoon at the Hart Center.

The Hatters (6-4) shot just 30 percent from the floor and 24 percent from the arc to fall for just the second time in the last seven games.

"We had a bad start, and we had a bad start to the second half," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "They are a good team, and you can't come out like that against a good team. I thought we crawled back into it, but just not enough."

The Crusaders (6-4) shot 47 percent overall from the floor, and their 65 points was a season-high for a Stetson opponent. Holy Cross also held a 41-34 edge on the glass.

"I am really disappointed in our defense and our rebounding," Bria said. "We've been real consistent in those two areas (all year). Our offense has been up and down, but our defense and rebounding - there's no excuse for that. We have to figure it out."

Yazz Wazeerud-Din led the Hatters with 15 points, while Tatiana Streun recorded an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, her fourth of the season.

Bronagh Power-Cassidy led all players with 17 points.

Holy Cross opened the game on an 11-0 run and led by 13 at the break.  The Crusaders then led 41-21 early in the second half before the Hatters fought back. Stetson cut the deficit to nine on a Maddie Novak triple at the end of the third quarter and to six on a Kiya Turner free throw with 7:14 to play.

However, The Crusaders scored the next nine points to pull away.

The Hatters will face another good road test Wednesday when they visit #17 USF in Tampa. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
