Hatters top College of Charleston 67-59, snap 12-game losing streak to the Cougars

DeLand, Fla. -- Christiaan Jones led the Stetson University men's basketball team to a 67-59 win over College of Charleston Thursday night at the Edmunds Center as the graduate student tallied a season-high 23 points, helping the Hatters to their second win in a row and snapping their 12-game losing streak to the Cougars.

The Hatters (4-6) got on the board at the 18:48 mark on a layup from Mahamadou Diawara, but by the 15:54 mark Stetson trailed 9-5 and a minute later, the Cougars (7-4) had a 13-5 lead. With 8:26 left in the half, a Jones trey knotted the contest at 20 apiece as the Hatters and the Cougars continued to play a back-and-forth game. After back-to-back layups from Josh Smith and Stephan Swenson, the Hatters went to the locker room ahead 31-27 and did not look back.

The Hatters came out of the break firing on all cylinders as Stetson went on a 10-1 run over the first three minutes of the second half to take a commanding 13-point lead with 17:06 left in regulation. After a Swenson jumper, the Hatters took a 15-point lead at the 16:00 mark as College of Charleston continued to trail by double figures for the next nine minutes. After an 11-0 run, the Cougars cut it to a 52-49 game with 5:27 left in the second half. The Hatters quickly answered as Chase Johnston hit a jumper in the paint and then a minute later, Johnston hit a 39-foot 3-pointer to put the Hatters up 57-49 and all but seal the Stetson win. The Cougars continued to keep the game close, cutting it to within six points with 16 seconds left, but the Hatters continued to sink free throws at the end and came away with the victory.

"One of our biggest hard-fought victories of the year and I thought it was a great team effort," said Hatters' head coach Donnie Jones. "Christiaan Jones obviously played like that leader we needed him to step up and be tonight. Really proud of the effort. Great team in Charleston as they've had some great victories. It was good for our guys just seeing the continued improvement of our team."

Three Hatters tallied double figures as Jones' 23 points led all scorers on the night. Johnston added 14 of his own, going 5-for-9 from the field and Josh Smith recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 boards.

The Hatters held a lead for a total of 26:15 and never trailed after the 5:33 mark in the first half.

The Stetson men's basketball team will return to action on Monday, Dec. 20 as the Hatters travel to Coral Gables to face the Miami Hurricanes in another ACC-ASUN crossover matchup. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
