Hatters fall 82-72 at Miami

Coral Gables, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team came up short against the University of Miami Monday night as the Hatters fell 82-72 to the Canes at the Watsco Center.

The Hatters (4-7) competed with the Hurricanes (9-3) in the opening minutes of the first half and by the first media timeout at the 16:06 mark, Stetson trailed 8-7. Then, after an 18-5 Miami run, the Hatters trailed 26-12 with 8:59 left in the half.  At the 4:58 mark, Chase Johnston cut the Stetson deficit to eight after a fastbreak 3-pointer, but just before the break, the Canes Kameron McGusty hit a trey to extend Miami's lead to 39-26.

Five and half minutes into the second half, at the 14:28 mark, Miami's Charlie Moore extended the Canes' lead to 54-35 on a 3-point field goal but over the next four minutes, Stetson went on an 11-3 run and cut its deficit to 57-46, with 10:29 left in regulation. Over the final 10 minutes, the Hatters and Canes traded blows as Johnston continued to have the hot hand from beyond the arc connecting on consecutive triples at the 8:00 mark and 7:19 mark, but Miami answered back each time. After falling behind 77-57 with 4:11 left, the Hatters closed out the game on a 15-5 run, highlighted by two 3-point field goals from freshman Alvin Tumblin, but it was not enough as Stetson ultimately fell 82-72.

Three Hatters finished in double figures as Johnston led all Hatters scorers on the night with 18 points on a season-high six 3-pointers. Rob Perry recorded 16 points of his own and six rebounds while Christiaan Jones added 12 and brought down seven boards.

Miami's McGusty led all scorers on the night as the sixth-year redshirt senior racked up 27 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the field and 6-of-8 from 3-point range.

The Stetson men's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 22 as the Hatters return home to host NCAA Division III Piedmont University in a midweek matinee. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
