Tennessee State Holds Off Stetson in Hatter Classic Finale

DeLand, Fla. - Stetson's 28-point fourth quarter was not enough to overcome a sluggish start as Tennessee State posted a 60-56 victory over the Hatters Sunday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

Both teams scored just 17 points in the first half before the Tigers used a 15-0 run midway through the third quarter to surge into the lead.

"Not a good first half," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "The second and third quarter just killed us - opposite of the game the other day.  We just didn't come out ready to play."

In the fourth quarter, the Hatters (7-6) cut a 15-point deficit all the way down to four with less than two minutes to play, but the Tigers (5-6) held on down the stretch to take the final game of the 34th Annual Hatter Classic.

"I thought Tennessee State dictated the game," Bria said.  "Towards the end of the second half I thought we started to play with a little more sense of urgency."

Turnovers and missed free throws plagued the Hatters throughout much of the game.  Stetson shot just 45 percent from the free throw line (10-of-23) and turned the ball over 21 times.

"If we make our free throws, the game is a different. If we make a couple of wide-open layups, the game is different," Bria said.  "Games like this come down to the little things, and we didn't do them. I am really disappointed."

Stetson scored just 28 points in the first three quarters combined, including a season-low four points in the second quarter.  However, the Hatters shot 69 percent (9-for-13) from the floor and hit three 3-pointers in the final period.

Tatiana Streun and Alyssa Hargrove led the Hatters with 13 points apiece, while Jamiya Turner chipped in 12.  Gia Adams scored 13 points for the Tigers, who held a 38-34 advantage on the glass.

Stetson heads into the holiday break with a 7-6 record. The Hatters will host Flagler College at 11 a.m. on Dec. 31 in the team's final non-conference tune-up.
