HC 29 - The Doctors

Athletic Department Ricky Hazel, Associate AD

Medical Team Working Hard for Stetson Student-Athletes

It has been almost a year since the world changed. College athletics stopped. Professional sports stopped. Students attended classes from home. Almost everyone stayed at home most of the time.

The entire world became focused on stopping a pandemic that seemed unstoppable and is still raging havoc across the world. Everyone learned about the benefits of wearing masks in public, frequent hand washing and the need for social or physical distancing from others.

While the world was learning to deal with the new realities of life, medical professionals were looking for answers – answers about how to save lives, how the prevent the spread of Covid-19 and how to return to the lives we lived before March of 2020.

Stetson Athletics' medical support team is no different. Doctors Mark Hollmann, Ben Thomasson and John Hill work with Stetson as team physicians to help serve the student-athletes' physical needs so they can compete at the highest levels. AdventHealth provides innumerable medical services, from Certified Athletic Trainers to physical therapy and rehab services while Stetson's own Sports Medicine staff works diligently every day with coaches and students to make sure everyone remains healthy.

Doctors Hollmann and Thomasson are part of the team at Florida Orthopaedic Associates while Dr. Hill serves as a primary care physician and sports medicine specialist at West Volusia Family and Sports Medicine.

The duties of all the professionals who serve Stetson Athletics changed drastically when events were canceled. The focus moved to testing for the corona virus, isolating and caring for individuals who tested positive and keeping everyone else safe through contact tracing and isolation.

Doctors Hollmann, Thomasson and Hill joined Erik Nason, AdventHealth's Sports Medicine Partnership Manager, and Stetson Athletics' Head Athletic Trainer Tim Miesmer for a round-table discussion on the status of athletics health care, Stetson's partnership with AdventHealth and the work that has gone into allowing college athletes to return to competition in this edition of Hatter Chatter … The Podcast, presented by Insight Credit Union.
