Hatters Hold Off Owls for Key ASUN Victory

KENNESAW, Ga.—Stetson's Christiaan Jones scored a game-high 20 points as the Hatters downed Kennesaw State, 74-61, Friday in ASUN Conference play at the KSU Convocation Center.

Jones, a senior guard who entered the game 23 points shy of 1,000 for his career, was 6 of 13 from the floor and perfect on all seven attempts from the free throw line as the Hatters (8-10 overall, 5-6 ASUN) beat Kennesaw for the fifth time in the last six meetings.

The Hatters led most of the night but struggled to pull away from the pesky Owls (3-16, 0-11). Stetson held a 35-31 halftime lead, and led by just four at 59-55 with 5:37 to play before closing the game on a 15-6 run.

Four straight points by Mahamadou Diawara gave Stetson a 63-55 lead and the Hatters stretched the margin to 67-57 on back-to-back buckets by freshmen Chase Johnston and Josh Smith. Fellow freshman Stephan Swenson sealed the game when his 3-point play with 2:21 to go gave the Hatters a 70-57 advantage.

Stetson shot 48 percent from the field and was 16 of 18 from the free throw line. Kennesaw State mustered just 41 percent shooting from the field and the Owls were 6 of 22 from 3-point range.

Jones added 6 rebounds to his game-high scoring total. Johnston scored 17 points, and Rob Perry chipped in 13. Diawara had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Spencer Rodgers led Kennesaw State with 17 points.
