Wazeerud-Din Nets 30 as Hatters Down North Alabama 75-66

Big 1st Quarter Keys Victory

DeLand, Fla. – Behind a sizzling first quarter that saw the Hatters jump out to a 26-6 lead, Stetson rolled to a 75-66 victory over North Alabama Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

Yazz Wazeerud-Din hit five 3-pointers poured in a career-high 30 points as the Hatters (5-9, 3-6 ASUN) took Game 1 of the weekend set vs. the Lions (5-15, 4-7). The teams will play again Sunday at 2 p.m.

Stetson sparkled during the opening 10 minutes, taking an 8-0 lead out of the gate and finishing the quarter on an 11-0 run.  The Hatters also led by 20 at the break and by 16 after 3.

Wazeerud-Din went 8-for-13 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the arc, adding eight rebounds and two steals in a career-best performance.  She has now scored 52 points in her last two games.

With the Hatters down a couple of post players, Jamiya Turner made an impressive debut at the pivot, scoring 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds and drew three opponent charging calls.  Kiya Turner chipped in a career-high 13 points and Maria Visone added nine.

Jaida Bond led North Alabama with 18 points.

Stetson shot 49 percent from the floor and limited its turnovers to just 12.

  • The Hatters improved to 3-0 all-time vs. the Lions at the Edmunds Center
  • Stetson won its 87th straight game when scoring 74 points or more. 
  • Wazeerud-Din's 30-points is the most by a Hatter since Day'Neshia Banks scored 32 vs. Holy Cross on Dec. 30, 2019.
  • Wazeerud-Din has scored in double figures in 10 straight games
  • Jamiya Turner has scored in double figures in all 8 home games
  • Maria Visone hit three 3-pointers for the third straight game
  • All five starters played in excess of 31 minutes.  Wazeerud-Din played her second straight full 40-minute game, while Tippy Robertson played over 39 minutes.
  • The 6 points allowed in the first quarter was a season-low for a Stetson opponent
