North Alabama Survives Hatters Second-Half Rally

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson scored 45 second-half points and nearly erased a 19-point deficit, but North Alabama held on for a 70-65 victory Sunday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

In a script similar to Saturday's Game 1 with the roles reversed, a huge first quarter by the Lions (6-15, 5-7 ASUN) on Sunday proved to be the difference in the game.

Kiya Turner led the Hatters (5-10, 3-7 ASUN) with a career-high 18 points as the two teams split their weekend ASUN Conference series.

On Saturday, Stetson grabbed a 26-6 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play. Sunday, it was North Alabama taking a 23-7 lead after the first quarter.  The Lions extended their lead to 17 at the break and to 19 early in the 3rd quarter.

However, has they have done several times previously this season, the Hatters got the offense going in the second half.  Yazz Wazeerud-Din and Maddie Novak hit back-to-back 3-pointers during a 12-0 3rd-quarter run that pulled Stetson within six, 48-42, after 3.

In the fourth quarter, the intensity level picked up as both teams traded baskets. The Hatters kept it close but never got closer than 2, 48-46, with 8:09 to play.  Stetson pulled to within three several times in the final 75 seconds, but the Lions hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to hold on.

Turner scored 14 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter alone. For the game, she was 8-for-10 from the floor with six rebounds and three assists.  Wazeerud-Din scored 16 points giving her a total of 46 for the weekend. She also collected a career-high seven steals. Jamiya Turner registered 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.

Both teams shot 44 percent from the floor, but the Lions held a slight 36-29 edge on the boards.  Jaida Bond scored 19 points to lead North Alabama.

The Hatters are scheduled to travel to Kennesaw State next weekend.
