Hatters Defeated in Season-Opener

DeLAND--In their first return to game action since October of 2019, Stetson women's soccer suffered a 2-1 loss to Georgia Southern to open the spring season, Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.
 
Though Saturday's match was the first of the season for the Hatters, they faced a Georgia Southern team with a full fall slate behind them.
 
The Eagles (4-10-1) certainly benefited from that experience as they stifled multiple Hatter scoring chances in the opening minutes of play. Georgia Southern quickly netted a pair of goals in the final ten minutes of the half, leaving the Hatters in a 2-0 hole at the break.
 
The Hatters quickly settled things down to start the second half. They blanked the Eagles and only allowed three shots on goal, all of which were saved by Stetson keeper Zoe Welsh. The Hatters led the Eagles in shots for the match, 16-10.
 
The Hatters showed some fight in the second half as senior forward Lily Truong found the back of the net in the 49th minute on an assist from Britney Bertram. Stetson was unable to complete the comeback after managing only two more shots to end the game.
 
Stetson returns to action against fIU, 6 p.m., Thursday, at the ATC.
