Johnston Leads Hatters Past Jacksonville

DeLAND—Stetson's Chase Johnston scored a season-high 24 points to lead the Hatters past Jacksonville, 91-75, in ASUN Conference action, Friday at Edmunds Center.
 
Johnston was one of four Hatters to reach double figures. He was 9 of 14 from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range.
 
The Hatters (9-11 overall, 6-7 ASUN) led from start to finish, building a lead of as much as 29 points (65-36) in the second half.
 
Stetson dominated play in the first half, shooting 62 percent from the field on the way to a 50-35 advantage at halftime. Johnston had 16 points at the break as Stetson made 10 of its 14 3-point shots.
 
The lead continued to grow in the second half. A three-point play by Josh Smith gave the Hatters a 65-36 lead with 12:59 to play, and the Hatters were never seriously challenged after that. Jacksonville never got any closer than 13 points.
 
Rob Perry scored 18 points for Stetson, while Christiaan Jones added 15. Mahamadou Diawara scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
 
Kevion Nolan led Jacksonville with 17 points.
 
Game Notes
  • The final 16-point margin of victory was Stetson's largest against the Dolphins since an 86-68 win on Dec. 16, 1977 in DeLand, a span of 57 games in the series
  • Stetson scored 50 points in the first half on Friday, after scoring 51 points in the second half last Saturday at Kennesaw State
  • Freshman Chase Johnston enjoyed his fourth 20-point performance of the season
  • With five 3-pointers on Friday, Johnston now has 63 for the season, leaving him seven made threes shy of breaking Rob Perry's one-year old school freshman season record of 69
  • Johnston and Perry continued their double-figure scoring streaks on Friday. Perry has now scored 10 or more points in eight straight games, while Johnston has done it in 10 straight.
  • The Hatters are now 8-1 when scoring 70 or more points
  • Freshman Stephan Swenson finished with 5 assists, the sixth time this season he's had at least 5
  • Sophomore Wheza Panzo tied a career high with 9 rebounds
  • Stetson shot 53 percent for the game, the fourth time the season the Hatters have shot 50 percent or better
  • Stetson finished with 11 3-pointers, the 11th time this season the Hatters have made at least 10
