Hatters Come Up Short

DeLAND—Jacksonville's Bryce Workman scored 33 points and Stetson's second half rally fell just short as the Hatters suffered an 86-82 setback to the Dolphins in ASUN Conference action, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

Rob Perry netted 27 points for the Hatters (9-12 overall, 6-8 ASUN), adding 8 rebounds and 6 assists but his efforts and those of his teammates in the second half weren't enough.

The Hatters trailed 44-38 at halftime and by as many as 18 points (51-33) with 17:42 left in the game before mounting a furious rally.

Stetson went on a 20-8 run and pulled to within 59-53 on a Chase Johnston 3-pointer with 10:09 to play. The Hatters stayed within striking distance for much of the rest of the game, but they couldn't get any closer than seven points.

A Stephan Swenson triple put the Hatters within 73-66 with 5:26 to go, but the Dolphins (11-13, 5-9) quickly bumped the lead back to double digits as Tyrese Davis layup and a Kevion Nolan 3-pointer made it 78-67 with 3:03 left.

The Hatters twice got the lead won to 5 points in the final 30 seconds but never got any closer than the final margin.

Workman went 10 of 14 from the field and 13 of 14 from the line.

Perry finished 9 of 15 from the field with 4 three-pointers. Joining him in double figures were Christiaan Jones with 16, while Swenson added 11. Gabriel Wuor, a 7-1 freshman who missed the previous 6 weeks with a broken hand, scored 9 points and added 2 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals and 2 assists, playing a season-high 26 minutes.

Game Notes

  • Stetson has yet to sweep an ASUN weekend series, splitting in 6 of their 7 conference weekends
  • Mahamadou Diawara played just 5 minutes on Saturday after being whistled for a pair of fouls in the first minute of the game. He picked up his third foul less than a minute into the second half and remained on the bench until the final minutes.
  • Stetson was 11 of 26 from 3-point range, reaching double-figures in 3-pointers for the 12th time this season
  • The Hatters shot 68 percent from the field (19-28) in the second half, their best effort in any half this season
  • Jacksonville was limited to 41-percent shooting in the second half, but the Dolphins made up for it by going 16 of 20 from the free throw line
  • Chase Johnston saw his double figure scoring streak end at 9 games after being held to just 4 points on 1-for-11 shooting
