Career Night by Jones Not Enough as Hatters Edged by UNF, 79-74

DeLAND—Stetson's Christiaan Jones scored a career-high 34 points but the Hatters couldn't get enough stops down the stretch as North Florida hung on for a 79-74 ASUN Conference win, Friday afternoon at Edmunds Center.

Jones, a senior playing his final weekend at home, was a one-man wrecking crew as he went 14 of 18 from the floor and a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

Stetson (9-13 overall, 6-9 ASUN), however, wasn't able to match Jones' offensive prowess on the defensive end of the court as North Florida shot 53 percent from the field and made 13 of 31 shots from 3-point range.

After trailing 38-36 at halftime, Stetson forged a 47-42 lead with 16:06 to play. But the Hatters couldn't get any more breathing room, and UNF stormed back, using an 11-5 run to take a 53-52 lead with 11:06 left as Jose Placer scored on a layup.

The lead changed hands on each of the next three possessions before Stetson grabbed a 59-55 lead on consecutive layups by Jones and a free throw by Mahamadou Diawara.

North Florida finally went ahead for good on a Carter Hendricksen 3-pointer with 3:22 to go, making it a 68-65 lead. Jones made it 68-67 with a layup on the other end, but Jonathan Aybar gave UNF a 71-67 advantage with a trey at 3:06.

Jones pulled Stetson to within 74-72 on a driving layup with 44 seconds left, but UNF's Josh Berenbaum clinched the game with a corner 3-pointer to make it 77-72 with 27 ticks to go.

Chase Johnston joined Jones in double figures with 17 points. Diawara added 14 and 6 rebounds.

Placer led UNF with 20 points.

Game Notes
  • The 34 points by Jones are the most by a Hatter since Rob Perry scored 34 against Western Illinois on Nov. 9, 2019
  • Jones also set a career high with 14 field goals
  • Stetson was limited to just 5 3-pointers (all by Chase Johnston) after sinking 22 in two games last weekend vs. Jacksonville
  • Johnston's 5 3-pointers give him 69 for the season, tying him with Rob Perry for most by a freshman in Stetson history
  • Johnston is now 8 triples away from breaking Luke Doyle's overall Stetson season record of 76 (2016-17). Doyle did it in 32 games. Johnston has played just 22 so far.
  • Stetson came into the game ranked second in ASUN games with 9.3 3-pointers made per game
  • UNF's bench out-scored Stetson 32-4
  • The game featured 11 lead changes and 7 ties
