Hatters Down Mercer, 6-1

DeLAND—Stetson men's tennis picked up its first win of the season with a convincing 6-1 win over Mercer, Friday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
 
The Hatters (1-1) were playing for the first time since their season opener on Feb. 7, and they took full advantage of the opportunity to compete. Stetson won all three doubles matches and took five of singles contests.
 
In doubles, the Hatters started with a 6-1 win at No. 3 by Antoine Sanchez & Alexandre Hillhouse. The tandem of Marques Diogo & Clement Hamel were 6-2 winners at No. 1 singles, and Sven Thiergard & Fabian Penzkofer completed the sweep with a 7-6 (7-5) triumph at No. 2.
 
Leading 1-0 as play moved into singles action, more good things came for the Hatters. Hillhouse was the first winner for the Hatters with a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 4. Linus Bergevi followed with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 2.
 
Penzkofer's 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 clinched the team victory for the Hatters.
 
Tim Gennes joined in on the three-set action by taking a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 decision at No. 5, and Sanchez capped Stetson's day with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 1.
 
The Hatters next host Florida Atlantic, 3 p.m., Friday, march 5 at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
