Hatters Rally Past FIU to Earn Opening Day Split

Clermont, Fla. -- Elizabeth Jackson broke a 6-6 tie with an RBI triple in the top of the eighth inning as Stetson rallied for an 8-6 victory over FIU Saturday afternoon at Legends Way Ballfields.

The victory gave the Hatters (1-1) a split in their season opening doubleheader. Earlier in the day, #12 Kentucky improved to 12-0 on the season with a 7-0 victory over Stetson.

Lizzie Shubert hit her first home run of the year in Game 2, and Chloe Temples (1-0) pitched all 8 innings for the win.

Stetson rallied from 5-3 and 6-5 deficits to earn the victory.

With the scored knotted at 6 in the top of the eighth, Jackson ripped a clutch two-out triple to left to score pinch-runner Madison Jump pinch with the go-ahead run.  Riley Russell followed with an RBI single to right, and Temples worked a 1-2-3 bottom half to nail down the win.

Stetson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run double by Jordyn Stanfill and an RBI single by Juls Schumacher.

The Panthers (4-7) scored the next five runs, but Stetson pulled even with two runs in the fifth, the first coming via a blast off the bat of Shubert.  It was the 16th home run of her career.

FIU regained a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Hatters tied it up again in the sixth on an RBI single by Jackson.

Temples retired the final 10 batters she faced.

The Hatters will face New Mexico State at 10 a.m. and #12 Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
