Hatters Fall Short Despite Huge Second-Half Rally

Tonysha Curry registers her second career double-double

Nashville, Tenn. -- Stetson cut a 17-point second-half deficit all the way down to 1, but Lipscomb held on down the stretch for a 58-54 victory Saturday afternoon in Game 1 of a two-game ASUN series at Allen Arena.

Yazz Wazeerud-Din led the Hatters with 14 points, and Tonysha Curry registered a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The Bisons (6-7, 3-4 ASUN) led wire-to-wire, building a 17-point lead with 4:16 to play in the third quarter.  The Hatters (4-8, 2-5) began chipping away, cutting the deficit back down to 10 by the end the period.

Lipscomb pushed the lead back to 12 with 8:07 to go, but Stetson used a 6-0 run to pull within 6, 54-48 with 5:20 remaining in the 4th quarter.  Tippy Robertson converted a 3-point play with 2:31 left to make it a 4-point game and later hit from behind the arc with 1:09 to play to cut the deficit to 1.

The Hatters could not get the equalizer, however, despite two opportunities in the final minute, as the Bisons held on for the 4-point win.

Stetson hit 11 3-pointers in the game and shot 41 percent from behind the arc.  Wazeerud-Din (4) and Maria Visone (3) each posted season-highs in 3-pointers made.  The Hatters also held a 35-34 edge on the glass.

Jordan Peete led the Bisons with 15 points.

The same two teams will play Game 2 of their series at 3 p.m. Sunday.
