Hatters Nipped at FAU in Season Opener

BOCA RATON, Fla.—Florida Atlantic's Ivan Mykhailenko scored the game's only goal as the Owls edged Stetson, 1-0, in the season opener for the Hatters, Tuesday at FAU Soccer Stadium.

Playing for the first time in 455 days, first-year Stetson head coach Emmett Rutkowski and the Hatters battled the Owls (2-0) evenly for most of the game. Stetson and FAU each managed seven shots, had four corner kicks apiece, and were even whistled for 12 fouls each.

Seven players saw action in their first game as Hatters, and without benefit of any exhibition games, the Hatters took some time to hit their stride on Tuesday.

"We started off really slow and, especially with a young and inexperienced team, it showed," Rutkowski said. "We're not quite there yet as a group. I'm really happy with the effort, but we need to do more if we want to win games. On the plus side, as the game progressed, we looked more ready. As time went on, we got better and that was great to see."

After 45 scoreless minutes in the first half, the Owls broke the tie in the 56th minute when Mykhailenko netted a penalty kick goal for a 1-0 lead.

The Hatters didn't go away quietly, getting off three more shots, including two on-goal. Freshman Felix Aakerberg took both shots, but FAU keeper Neil Strauber was up to the task and made the save each time.

The penalty kick goal spoiled an otherwise strong effort by Stetson keeper Owen Jack. Making his first career start, Jack faced seven shots and stopped a pair of shots in 90 minutes.

Stetson returns to action when the Hatters visit Mercer, 6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17 in Macon, Ga.
