Hatters Sweep South Dakota in Home Opener

DeLand, Fla. -- After playing their first two weeks of the season on the road, the Hatters were certainly glad to be home.

Jordyn Stanfill hit her first career home run and Lauren Hobbs picked up her first win in the circle as Stetson swept South Dakota 8-0 and 7-3 Wednesday afternoon in the 2021 home opener at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters (4-6) combined for 15 runs and 23 hits in taking both ends of the doubleheader. Stanfill drove in six runs on the day while Elizabeth Jackson scored four times.

Stetson got contributions up and down the line-up, as well as two strong outings in the circle and a solid defensive effort.

Chloe Temples pitched a five-hit shutout in game 1 as Stetson won 8-0 in five innings.  Stanfill went 2-for-3 with four RBI, hitting a 3-run blast in the bottom of the fourth.  Danielle Diaz went 3-for-3 at the dish and Brianna Clary's two-run walk-off single in the bottom of the fifth gave Stetson its final 8-run margin.

Temples (2-3) scattered five hits, walked one, and struck out five.

In game 2, South Dakota (4-10) battled back from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the fifth.  Nyah Morgan made a spectacular diving catch in foul territory to end the top of the fifth, then delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to give Stetson a 4-3 lead.

Stetson added three insurance runs in the sixth as Jackson drove in Clary and Stanfill knocked in two more with a single to right.

Hobbs (1-0) made the lead hold up, striking out eight and walking just two over seven innings.

Stetson completed non-conference play with a 4-6 record.  The Hatters will travel to Fort Myers for a three-game ASUN series with FGCU this weekend beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday.
