Singles Play Leads Hatters Past Furman

DeLAND--Stetson men's tennis got back on track Friday with a 5-2 defeat of Furman at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
 
The Hatters (2-3) hadn't tasted victory since Feb. 26 against Mercer. But on Friday, Stetson was able to overcome a slow start in doubles and turned in a dominant performance in singles play.
 
Furman (4-6) won two of three doubles matches to capture the first point. Only Antoine Sanchez & Diogo Marques gained a victory for the Hatters in doubles, winning 6-3 on Court 1.
 
Down 1-0, the Hatters battled back. Sanchez was the first Hatter winner, taking a 6-3, 6-1 decision on Court 1. Sven Thiergard gave Stetson a 2-1 lead in the team scoring with a 6-1, 6-2 win on Court 3.
 
Josh Laka gave Stetson a 3-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win on Court 6., and Fabian Penzkofer sealed the victory with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph on Court 4.
 
Diogo Marques closed out the day for Stetson with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory on Court 2.
 
The Hatters return to action when they host Georgia State 2 p.m., Sunday.
