Hatters Rally Past Loyola for WBI First Round Win

McKenna Eddings scores five key points in the fourth quarter

Frankfort, Ky. -- Stetson rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat Loyola Chicago 49-45 Friday afternoon in the first round of the WBI at the William Exum Center.

Yazz Wazeerud-Din and Jamiya Turner combined for 32 points as the Hatters (10-13) advanced Saturday's semifinal against Cleveland State. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m.

Stetson survived despite scoring just two points in the second quarter and 16 points in the first half.  Loyola (11-14) led 27-17 midway through the third quarter when Stetson finally starting clicking on offense. Jamiya Turner made four baskets and Kiya Turner connected on two more as part of a 12-2 Stetson run to close the period.

With the score tied at 29, the Hatters opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run.  Alyssa Derrick crashed the offensive glass for a putback, Wazeerud-Din turned a steal into a fastbreak lay-up, and freshman McKenna Eddings' drained her first career basket from beyond the arc to give Stetson a 36-29 lead.

The Ramblers cut the deficit back down to 1 before Wazeerud-Din hit a clutch 3 to put Stetson back up by 4.  The Hatters then hit six straight from the free throw line and held off a late Loyola run to seal the victory.

The win marks Stetson's third NCAA postseason victory and their first since 2015.

Wazeerud-Din finished with a game-high 18 points as she went 3-for-5 from 3-point range  Jamiya Turner recorded her second career double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds), and Kiya Turner added eight points.  Eddings chipped in five points, all in the fourth quarter, to provide a much-needed cushion.
