Sardinas, Durgin Honored For Performances

After taking two of three games from Florida Gulf Coast over the weekend to begin play in the ASUN, and with a road win last Tuesday at FIU, a pair of Hatters were honors for their performances last week.

Graduate Hernen Sardinas was selected as co-Player of the Week for the ASUN after hitting .600 in the four games last week, with four runs scored and six driven in.

In addition, redshirt freshman right-handed pitcher Nick Durgin was selected as one of Collegiate Baseball Newspapers' National Players of the Week, Powered by Diamond. The publication names three pitchers and three hitters for its weekly award.

Sardinas, a graduate transfer from the University of Maine, is the first Hatter to earn ASUN Player of the Week honors this year. Brandon Hylton won the award on February 24, 2000. Sardinas is the 29th Stetson player to be named Player of the Week, with Stetson players earning the award 46 times overall.

Sardinas has been held hitless in just three games all year and has had multiple hits in the last five, and seven of the last eight, games since missing the first two games at Alabama. He currently leads the ASUN in batting average, hits and slugging and leads all of college baseball with his 11 doubles. Sardinas helped the Hatters to a 3-1 record last week with a double, a homer and six RBI while drawing four walks. He was 9-for-15 (.600) at the plate, all while playing games at three positions (1B, RF, LF). In addition to being the NCAA leader in doubles, he is the active career doubles leader in Division I.

Durgin, who was named ASUN Pitcher of the Week for his outing at Alabama, earned a bigger honor this week. Durgin turned in a masterful performance in the Hatters' ASUN opener against FGCU. After allowing a two-run homer in the first inning, Durgin dominated the Eagles for the next seven, recording a career-high 14 strikeouts while, at one point, retiring 12 FGCU hitters in a row. He closed out his night by striking out the final three batters he faced.

The 14 strikeouts were the most in a game for any Stetson pitcher since Mitchell Senger had 16 Ks against George Washington in his 2018 no-hitter.

Durgin is second in the ASUN, behind teammate Chris Gonzalez, in total innings pitched this year, and leads the league with 46 strikeouts. He ranks 30th in the nation in total strikeouts. He is tied for third in the league with four wins.

The Hatters will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they square off against the Bulls of the University of South Florida for the fifth, and final, time this year. USF has a 3-1 series lead this year.

That game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start in Tampa and is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
