Hot Shooting Lifts Stetson to 25-Point Win Over Jacksonville

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson exploded for 31 first-quarter points, 18 coming from Yazz Wazeerud-Din, as the Hatters cruised to an 89-64 victory over visiting Jacksonville Friday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (8-12, 6-9 ASUN) shot season-highs of 58 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the arc in taking Game 1 of the two-game ASUN Conference series with the Dolphins (3-15, 1-12).

Wazeerud-Din led four Hatters in double figures with 28 points, but it was her first quarter that really impressed.  In the opening 10 minutes, the Hatter junior went 6-for-6 from the floor, hitting all four of her 3-point attempts, and 2-for-2 from the line for 18 points.  She hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the quarter to put an exclamation mark on the period.  Stetson shot 69 percent in the first frame and led 31-13 after 1.

Throughout the rest of the game, the Hatters got solid contributions from Kiya Turner (19 points), Jamiya Turner (14 points), Megan Vincent (10 points, 10 rebounds), and Maria Visone (9 points, 3 assists).  Vincent reached 700 career points while registering her third career double-double.  She also recorded three blocks.

Wazeerud-Din finished the game 10-for-13 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the arc.  Stetson hit 10 3-pointers as a team.

DeShari Graham led the Dolphins with 15 points.

The same two teams will meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday.
