Hatters Fall in Extra Innings, 6-5

Tampa, Fla. – A game that started as a slug-fest, turned into a pitching exhibition, and ended on a home run in extra innings went against the Hatters on Sunday as South Florida completed a weekend sweep of the Hatters with a 6-5 win.

The Bulls won their seventh straight and improved to 7-3 on the year. Stetson fell to 10-3.

Stetson took a 5-4 lead to the ninth inning with Chris Gonzalez on the mound. The redshirt junior had retired 23 straight USF hitters, with the help of a third inning double play, after allowing four runs in the opening inning.

After allowing a single to open the ninth, Gonzalez was replaced by Nick Chiseri, who recorded an out on a sacrifice bunt before allowing a walk. Danny Garcia came in and surrendered an infield hit to score the tying run and force extra innings.

Stetson had a chance to score in the 10th when Eric Foggo drew a walk off Dylan Burns and moved up to third on a single by Banks Griffith. The run was not to be, however, as Foggo was thrown out at home by Drew Brutcher on a Dylan Brazil fly ball to right.

The Hatters got out of a jam in the 11th inning when Garcia hit a pair of batters and walked another, but got a fly out to end the inning.

Redshirt sophomore Bret Neilan came on to pitch for Stetson in the 12th and, after retiring the first batter he faced, he surrendered a solo home run to Brutcher to give USF the win.

Stetson will return to action on Wednesday night when the Hatters trek to Gainesville for their first look at the new Florida Ballpark. It will be the first of four scheduled games this year between Stetson and Florida. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on SEC Network + with a first pitch at 6 p.m.
