Hatters Rally for Walk-Off Win Over Kennesaw State

Kennesaw, Ga. -- Marissa Baxter went 4-for-4, Lizzie Shubert belted a 3-run home run and Riley Russell hit a walk-off single as Stetson defeated Kennesaw State 7-6 Sunday afternoon at Bailey Park.

Lipscomb defeated Stetson 1-0 in the first game of the day despite a stellar effort from Hatters' starting pitcher Chloe Temples.

Stetson (7-19) played as the home team in each game Sunday as part of the ASUN Divisional Crossover weekend.

Against the Owls, Stetson trailed 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Shubert delivered a two-out, 3-run home run to center field to give Stetson a 6-5 lead.  It was her sixth home run of the season and the 21st of her career.

Kennesaw State (16-19) battled back to tie the game in the top of the 7th on a two-out RBI double by Taylor Cates.

The Hatters got to work in the bottom of the seventh. Baxter led off the inning with a single to left, her fourth hit of the game. After a fielder's choice and a pop out, Brianna Clary singled to left and Elizabeth Jackson walked to load the bases.  Russell then ripped a 0-1 pitch through the right side allowing Catherine Beaton to scamper home with the winning run.

Jaime Tino went the distance in the circle to earn her third win of the season.

Danielle Diaz, Baxter, and Beaton each drove in runs in the first inning to help spot Stetson to a 3-0 lead.  The Owls are currently leading the ASUN's North Division.

Against Lipscomb, Temples surrendered a lead-off single to the first batter of the game, then settled in and retired the next 20 hitters in a row.  Through 7 innings she allowed just two hits and no runs.

Her counterparts, Lipscomb's Maddie Siemer and Breana Burke, kept the Hatters at bay as well.  Stetson recorded just one bunt single through the first seven innings.

The Bisons broke through with an unearned run in the top of the eighth, and although Stetson put the tying and winning runs aboard in the bottom of the frame, the Bisons held on for the 1-run victory.

Temples finished with no walks and five strikeouts over eight innings.  She allowed three hits and one run.

Stetson will take a week off and return to action April 24-25 with a 3-game series at UNF.

Notes: Riley Russell, who was born in Kennesaw on an April 11th, celebrated her birthday with a diving catch in deep rightcenter and a game-winning walk-off single ... Baxter became the first Hatter with four hits in a game since Danielle Diaz vs. Providence in 2019 ... Kennesaw State entered the week with a national RPI of 40 ... Stetson won for the second time this season when trailing after 5 ... Stetson's 12 hits against the Owls tied a season-high.
