Valdosta, Ga. – The Stetson women's golf team was the only squad in the field for the 2021 ASUN Championship to move up on the leaderboard during Monday's second round of play at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
The Hatters improved their team score by five shots over Sunday's round, which edged Stetson into fourth place, five shots in front of Lipscomb, but five shots behind Florida Gulf Coast for third place and a spot in the final pairings for Tuesday's final round.
"We had a much better start to our round today and that carried over through the rest of the round," Stetson coach
Danielle Shelburne said. "Still, I wish we could have gotten into those final groups for tomorrow."
Kennesaw State's Tai Anudit continued her strong play as she fired another four-under par 68 to extend the Owls' lead to 12 strokes over second place North Florida. Her teammate, Lara Jecnik, carded her second-straight two-under par 70 to sit alone in second place.
UNF improved its team score by six strokes in the second round, and three Ospreys are in the top-five with Christin Eisenbeiss (3rd; Even), Mindy Herrick (4th; +1) and Sara McKevitt (T5th; +3). FGCU remained in third place led by Sarah Edwards (T7th; +4) and Laura Edmonds (11th; +6) as the pair both registered 74 on Monday.
Stetson moved up one spot in the top-four as seniors
Hanna Kiefer (T7th; +4) and
Sarah May (T12th; +7) are leading the Hatters. May's second round total of 73 was the tops by a Stetson golfer, moving her up 10 spots on the individual leaderboard.
May finished her round with one birdie, which came on the final hole, and just two bogeys.
"Sarah played a lot better than her score indicates," Shelburne said. "She had six birdie putts that lipped out."
Kiefer did not have as much fortune in the second round, with six bogeys on her card to go along with a single birdie on the par 3 15
th hole. She dropped from third to a tie for seventh, but is still within four strokes of a top five finish.
Junior
Bianca Sol Cruz was in position to make a move into the top 10 as well, but a bogey/double-bogey finish on the last two holes left her with a second round 76. Sophomore
Wendy Hsiao also posted a 76 in the second round. After making the turn at one over, she had three straight bogeys in the middle of the back nine.
Senior
Meghan McLean got off to another rough start, she was three over after four holes, and was not able to find any birdies, finishing with a second round 80.
The 31st edition of the ASUN Women's Golf Championship concludes on Tuesday with the final round starting at 8 a.m. Stetson tee times will begin at 8:36 a.m. and the Hatters will play the final round with Lipscomb and North Alabama. Follow all of the Live Scoring via
