Rutkowski Notches First Win as Hatters Down FGCU

Stetson men's soccer closed out the spring regular season with a win, defeating FGCU, 2-1, Friday night in Fort Myers.

With the victory, Stetson's Emmett Rutkowski collected his first win as head coach.

"It's been a long time coming," Rutkowski said. "I was really proud of the group. You could just see it in the excitement when we were scoring goals."

Ben Alram opened scoring for Stetson (1-4-2, 1-3-2 ASUN) with a goal in the 24th minute of play. Maxime Allione was credited with the assist. The Hatters added to their lead in the second half when Alex Turner scored off a feed from Ajmeer Spengler.

FGCU (2-3-3, 2-2-2 ASUN) did cut into the Hatter lead, but it was far too late. Marcos Da Paz scored, unassisted, with only four seconds remaining in the match.

For Rutkowski, Saturday's win was a small glimpse of what the Hatters have been working towards all season.

"We had some guys step up individually, but it was a really cohesive unit getting this win," Rutkowski said. "That is what, for me, is special. You actually get to see what we are doing everyday come together."

The Hatters will now turn their focus towards the ASUN tournament. The Hatters are locked into the #4 seed in the ASUN's south division. On April 10, they will visit the division's #1 seed in the Quarterfinal round. That opponent will be determined this weekend.

Fresh off of his first win, Rutkowski was quick to turn his attention towards the postseason.

"I think the first win is always the hardest," Rutkowski said. "Now we have to get more. Especially with a young team it is about how do you replicate that performance and how do we build on this. Hopefully we are peaking now at the right time. I think that is critical."

The Hatters will look to build on their momentum next weekend.
