Hatters Edged By FGCU in Series Opener

DeLand, Fla. -- The Hatters and Eagles will become familiar foes over the next two weeks, and their first battle on Friday night did not disappoint.

In a tightly contested affair that featured two ties and two lead changes, FGCU defeated Stetson 4-3 in the teams' ASUN series opener at Patricia Wilson Field.

Hope Hernandez led the Eagles (24-17, 13-3 ASUN) with two doubles and an RBI.  Elizabeth Jackson went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Hatters (8-22, 3-13).

After FGCU scored one in the top of the first, the Hatters pulled even in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Riley Russell. Stetson took a 2-1 lead in the second when Catherine Beaton scored all the way from first on a throwing error following a bunt single by Alyssa Gilman.

The Eagles scored two in the third to take a 3-2 lead, then added an insurance run in the fifth.  That run provided vital after the Hatters cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Jackson.

Stetson could not pull even, however, as FGCU reliever Sarah Lawton closed the door over the final two innings.

Jaime Tino went the distance in the circle for the Hatters, allowing just three earned runs over seven innings, while striking out two.

Stetson made several nice defensive plays, including a 5-2 double play turned by third baseman Danielle Diaz, shortstop Lizzie Shubert throwing a strike to first base from her knees, and Nikki Steiniger cutting down a base-stealer with a perfect throw to second.

In addition to tomorrow's 1 p.m. doubleheader to conclude the regular season, Stetson and FGCU will meet again next week in the ASUN Championship Divisional series, a best two-out-of-three series in Fort Myers.

On Saturday, Stetson will honor seniors Russell and Jackson prior to the first game.
