Jacksonville, Fla. – A fast start on Friday night was not enough for Stetson at Harmon Stadium as host North Florida chipped away throughout the game before scoring three runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 series opening victory over the Hatters.
Stetson (26-22) will have to win on Saturday to extend its seasons. The Ospreys (20-21) need just one win in the next two games to move on to play in the ASUN Tournament next week.
The Hatters plated three runs off former teammate Austin Bogart in the first inning, but the left-hander settled in, allowing just one more run over the next seven frames. He threw a career-high 100 pitches over eight innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Stetson's
Danny Garcia, starting for just the second time this year, worked six innings for the Hatters, allowing all five runs on nine hits, five of which went for extra bases. He walked two and struck out two.
There were a trio of plays at the plate that stood out in the game. In the third inning,
Hernen Sardinas fired a strike home on a hit by Cade Westbrook to cut down Abraham Sequera trying to score from second. In the three-run sixth inning for UNF, Aidan Sweatt scored from third on a ground ball to first when the throw home by
Brandon Hylton was high.
Then, in the top of the seventh, Stetson's
Jorge Arenas tried to score from first on a double by
Andrew MacNeil, but was cut down at the plate on a close play to protect the UNF lead.
The Hatters never threatened again after the seventh as Bogart and UNF closer Brandon Reitz retired the final six Stetson hitters in order to wrap up the victory.
The Hatters and Ospreys will return for the second game of the series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
