Redshirt freshman right-handed pitcher
Nick Durgin entered rarified air on Monday when was selected as the ASUN Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season.
Â
He is just the 29
th pitcher in ASUN history to be named Pitcher of the Week as many as three times in a career, and is just the 16
th in league history to earn Pitcher of the Week honors three or more times in one season. The last ASUN pitcher to be recognized as many as three times in one year was
Mitchell Senger during the 2018 campaign.
Â
In addition to this being his third Pitcher of the Week award of the year, it is the fourth time this year a Stetson pitcher has earned the honor. All-time, Stetson pitchers have been named ASUN Pitcher of the week 43 times, which is second only to Jacksonville.
Â
Durgin is the fifth Stetson hurler to be selected as ASUN Pitcher of the Week three times in his career – joining Logan Gilbert, who had four, and Senger, Chris Ingoglia and Corey Kluber who had three each. Ingoglia earned all three of his honors during the 2007 season.
Â
Durgin was dominant in a complete-game, two-hit shutout victory over Jacksonville on Friday. The only hits he allowed in the game were a third inning grounder up the middle – one he almost got a glove on – and a ninth inning ground ball through the right side.
Â
Otherwise, Durgin allowed a walk, had a runner reach on an error and another reach on a strikeout/wild pitch. The complete game was a first for Durgin, who had only once before reached the ninth inning. He needed just 105 pitches to post the shutout.
Â
For the season, Durgin has a 6-2 record with a 2.61 ERA in 10 starts. He has 67 strikeouts in 62.0 innings of work. He has now made 14 starts in his career, posting an 8-2 record with a 2.31 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 89.2 innings.
Â
In addition to Durgin, Stetson's fifth-year senior leadoff hitter
Andrew MacNeil was nominated for ASUN Player of the Week honors. MacNeil continued to be the consummate table-setter for the Hatters, reaching base in 12 of 19 plate appearances last week. He led off each of the four games during the week by reaching base, something he has done at a .431 clip this year. MacNeil has now reached base to lead off a game 18 times this year.
Â
He was hit by a pitch and scored in the first inning at FSU and later had an RBI double in that game. He singled and scored in the first inning on Friday, later drawing a walk and scoring. He followed that with a career-high four-hits on Saturday, with two doubles and a triple.
Â
MacNeil was again hit by a pitch to lead off Sunday's game, one of four times he reached base in that game. He currently ranks 2nd in the NCAA in runs scored this year with 51 and is 26th in times HBP (13). He ranks 5th in the ASUN in on-base percentage.
Â
MacNeil will play in his 200
th career game on Tuesday night in his hometown, Gainesville, when the Hatters square off against No. 9 Florida. That game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at the new Florida Ballpark and will be broadcast on the SEC Network Plus.
Â
Durgin will make his next start on Friday night in Jacksonville when the Hatters open the final ASUN series of the season at North Florida. Stetson and the Ospreys will enter play this weekend with identical 9-6 league records. Whichever team wins the series will have the opportunity to host the other again May 21-23 in the ASUN South Division Play-In Series.
