Hatters Rally, But Fall Short Against UNF

Jacksonville, Fla. – Short-handed Stetson battled to the end against North Florida on Saturday afternoon at Harmon Stadium, but the Hatters came up short, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Ospreys.

For the second time this season, Austin Bogart stung his former teammates, delivering a home run and an RBI triple, but it was Blake Marabell who was the difference in the game. The senior center fielder made multiple defensive plays to keep Stetson off the board, including bringing back a shot by Eric Foggo from over the fence. He then hit a game-winning two-run homer in the eighth inning.

Bogart, a graduate transfer for the Ospreys who graduated from Stetson in 2019, had a solo home run and an RBI triple to lead North Florida to a series clinching victory over the Hatters.

The loss for Stetson (23-20, 9-8 in ASUN) guarantees the Hatters will be on the road for the ASUN Divisional Play-in Series. The only question left to answer is whether Stetson will travel back to Jacksonville to play UNF or to Ft. Myers to face FGCU. The Ospreys (18-19, 11-6) have a half game lead over FGCU (24-17, 10-6) after the win today, and will need help from JU tonight to have a chance at the No. 1 spot. JU defeated FGCU 5-2 in the series opener on Friday.

Stetson managed just four hits in the game as UNF starter Tony Roca kept the Hatters off-balance through the first seven innings before Danny Martin homered to open the eighth, an inning in which Stetson scored three times to tie the game.

Stetson closer Danny Garcia was almost as good, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings in just his second career start. Freshman Austin Amaral surrendered three runs in his two innings of work and took the loss. The Hatters entered the weekend series without regular starters Nick Durgin and Chris Gonzalez.

The series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. UNF is expected to send Bogart (3-2, 3.52) to the mound to start the final game of the series. Stetson will likely use sophomore right-hander Bret Neilan (1-2, 6.82) or one of two freshmen right-handers – Cole Stallings (0-0, 4.15) or Jonathan Velazquez (0-1, 5.62) – in the starting role.

Following the series finale against UNF, Stetson will get one more chance at Florida on Tuesday night in DeLand. That game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start and is sold out. The Hatters will close the regular season next weekend, hosting Jacksonville on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. before returning to Harmon Stadium next Sunday for a 3 p.m. start against the Ospreys. Those games will not count in the ASUN standings.
