Hatters and Cougars play to scoreless draw

Charleston, S.C. -- The Stetson University men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against the College of Charleston Sunday evening at Ralph Lundy field at Patriots Point.

The Hatters (0-1-1) played their second overtime match of the season and their second in row as 110 minutes could not yield a victor. Stetson and CoC exchanged shots early in the first half, but neither the Hatters nor the Cougars (1-0-1) could find the back of the net.

Late in the second half, CoC's Jakob Kristensen found his way into the Stetson box and connected on a shot but Hatters keeper Jacob Gruber made a diving save in front of the Stetson goal to keep the Cougars off the board.

The Hatters and the Cougars combined for three shots late in the first overtime but that was the only offense in the extra 20 minutes of action as neither team got off a shot in the second OT.

Freshman Luis Lara Delgado led the Hatters offense with four shots on the night and two on goal. Gruber was 4-for-4 in save opportunities to lead the Stetson defense.

Sunday's match was the second time in as many matches between Stetson and CoC that the Hatters held the Cougars off the board. Stetson shutout CoC 1-0 in its 2019 season opener.

"Anytime we get a shutout, our team should be proud," said head coach Emmett Rutkowski. "I thought we defended much better," Rutkowski continued." "It's a good foundation for playing two NCAA caliber opponents next weekend."

Next week, Stetson's men's soccer team travels to Greensboro, N.C. as the Hatters take on UNC Greensboro on Friday, Sept. 3 in a 7 p.m. match. Then on Sunday, Sept. 5, the Hatters travel to Buies Creek to face Campbell University. Kick off against the Camels is set for 2 p.m.
