Hatters fall 3-2 late to UNC Greensboro

Greensboro, N.C. -- In its first match of the long weekend in the Tar Heel State, the Stetson University men's soccer team fell 3-2 against UNC Greensboro Friday night at the UNCG Soccer Field.

The Hatters (0-2-1) were out to a hot start as Stetson created early opportunities but was unable to find the back of the UNCG net. The Spartans (2-1) took advantage of the missed opportunities as UNCG's Theo Collomb netted both goals in the first half, giving the Spartans a 2-0 edge at the break.

Three minutes into the second half, the Hatters put pressure on the Spartans defense and cut the deficit to just one. From the right side of the box, freshman Gabriel Toro found Oliver Bryneus five yards out of the UNCG goal as he promptly put it past the Spartans keeper to make it a one-score match.

Late in the half, Stetson's Gio Rodriguez unloaded on a corner kick for the Hatters and found William Suaut in the box. Suaut headed the pass from Rodriguez and found the back of the Spartans net to knot the match at 2-2 with 15 minutes remaining. The Spartans responded 10 minutes later with the match's decisive goal as UNCG's Angel Bacho assisted Matthew Skinner off a corner kick for the eventual game-winning goal.

"We have a lot of freshmen that are playing critical roles. It's great experience for them and the key right now is how to play at our best when we're competing in conference," said head coach Emmett Rutkowski of his young Hatters squad. "It's really good to build on this, especially in the second half. I wanted tests week in and week out to prepare us for our schedule when we get going," Rutkowski continued. "This is the toughest stretch of the season."

Stetson's men's soccer team wraps up its North Carolina trip on Sunday, Sept. 4 as the Hatters travel to Buies Creek to take on the Campbell University Camels. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
