Toro’s goal leads Hatters in comeback draw against Campbell

Buies Creek, N.C. -- In their second match of the long weekend, the Stetson University men's soccer team played Campbell University to a 2-2 draw in a what was a physical and competitive match on Sunday afternoon.

The Hatters (0-2-2) fell behind just after the 15th minute as Campbell's Tyler Young found the lower right corner of the Stetson net on an assist from both Moses Mensah and George Bediko to put the Camels (2-1-1) on top 1-0. The Hatters defense held off a barrage of shots from the Camels in the remaining 30 minutes of the half and Stetson went into the break only trailing by one.

The second half saw the Stetson offense come to life. The Hatters outshot the Camels 9-3 and got themselves back into the match. In the 73rd minute, senior William Suaut gave a one-touch to Maxime Allione on the left side of the pitch who found Oliver Bryneus in the Campbell box. Bryneus connected on the shot and tied the match at 1-1. Five minutes later, the Camels Jalen James found the back of the Hatters net to put Campbell back in front with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.

In the 88th minute, Campbell keeper Edu Rodriguez made a foot save on a shot from freshman Gabriel Toro to preserve the Campbell lead. With 50 seconds left, a shot from senior Alex Turner hit off the Campbell crossbar but Toro was there for a second shot and this time found the back of the Camels net to knot the match at 2-2 to force overtime.

In overtime, both the Hatters and the Camels had opportunities to finish off the match but good defense from both sides and some unlucky breaks held Sunday's match at a 2-2 draw.

The Stetson University men's soccer team will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 10 as the Hatters travel to Tampa to take on the South Florida Bulls. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
