Pereira's hat trick leads Hatters past Embry-Riddle

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's soccer team routed Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 6-1 Tuesday night behind freshman Nelson Pereira's first career hat trick.

The Hatters (1-3-2) came out strong in their first win of the year as Stetson fired off three shots in the opening minutes of action. In the 30', Pereira found the back of the Eagles net for an assist from Kelvin Zinck, to lead off the barrage of Hatter goals. Four minutes later, Pereira found Alex Turner in the box who promptly put it past the Eagles keeper to extend the Stetson lead to 2-0 as the match headed to the break.

Out of the half, in the 48', Colton Myers crossed a pass from the far left side of the Eagles box to a wide open Pereira who headed it past the Embry-Riddle keeper for his second goal of the match. One minute later, it was Pereira again on an assist from Turner to put the Hatters up 4-0. Then in the 61', Sophomore Ajmeer Spengler scored Stetson's fifth goal of the night off a free kick.

The Eagles (1-3-0) found their way on the board in the 83' after a Hatters yellow card led to an Embry-Riddle penalty kick goal. Stetson regained a five-score advantage in the 85' on a goal from Felix Aakerberg on an assist from Jano Baxmann, putting the 6-1 win on ice.

Stetson out shot Embry-Riddle 18-3 on the night as Pereira (5) and Lewis Scattergood (4) combined for half of the Hatters total shots.

"For the guys, getting a first win under our belt is really important. Getting all the guys involved is huge, especially when you have twenty-four freshmen," said head coach Emmett Rutkowski. "And I think we can really build upon it as we start conference play this Saturday."

"Nelson didn't have any goals until this game and didn't play against USF, which I think was the right decision, because he came ready to go today," said Rutkowski on his Portuguese true freshman. "I can't wait for him to show what he can do in the ASUN."

Stetson's men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 18 at home with its first ASUN Conference match of the season as the Hatters host the Liberty University Flames. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
