Hatters fall 2-1 to Liberty in ASUN opener

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's soccer team dropped its first ASUN Conference match of the season 2-1 to Liberty University Saturday night at Stetson's ATC.

The Hatters (1-4-2, 0-1-0) outshot the Flames (3-3-0, 1-0-0) 20-7 on the night but Liberty made the most of its limited opportunities. In the 14' Liberty's Naoh Holmes found the back of the Stetson net on an assist from Seth Clark to put the Flames up 1-0.

After the first seven minutes of the second stanza, both teams had to endure a 38-minute lightning delay before play could resume.

Once the whistle blew to restart the match, the Hatters were on the attack for much of the second half as Stetson recorded 13 shots. From the 59' through the 61' minute, Stetson rattled off three shots and after a penalty on Nelson Pereira in the Liberty box, Oliver Bryneus scored the penalty kick goal to knot the match at 1-1.

Almost exactly 14 minutes later in the 74' Liberty's Michael Huss scored the game-winner on an assist by Michael Catanzarite.

Gabriel Toro led the Hatters with five shots with one on goal while Oliver Bryneus and Ajmeer Spengler each had four shots on the night.

Stetson men's soccer team will be back in action on Saturday, September 25 as the Hatters head to Nashville to take on the No. 22 Lipscomb University Bison in another ASUN Conference match. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. EST.
