Hatters upset No.18 Lipscomb in the Music City

Nashville, Tenn. -- The Stetson University men's soccer team upset No.18 Lipscomb University 3-2 in overtime Saturday night on the road behind a game tying goal from Oliver Bryneus and then the game-winner from Felix Aakerberg

It took less than five minutes into the overtime period to decide a winner as Maxime Allione played a ball to Nelson Pereira from the left side of the Lipscomb box. Facing pressure in the box, Pereira gave a short pass to Aakerberg who netted the golden goal to give the Hatters the upset over the 18th-ranked Bison.

Before Aakerberg's overtime heroics, in the 86' Bryneus intercepted a Lipscomb pass back to the Bison box. The junior beat the keeper in a one-on-one possession and found the back of the Lipscomb net to knot the match at 2-2.

The Hatters (2-4-2, 1-1-0) and the Bison (5-2-2, 1-1-0) played an aggressive first half but defense reigned supreme for both squads as the first shot was not recorded until the 17' when Bryneus missed wide right. One minute later, Lipscomb found an opportunity, but Hatters keeper Owen Jackmade the save to keep the match scoreless. In the 21', Stetson got on the board on a Lipscomb miscue as the Bison scored an own goal to put the Hatters up 1-0.

In the 34' minute, a foul in the Stetson box led to a Bison penalty shot. Jack saved the initial shot, but the ball ricocheted back to Lipscomb's Louis Robinson who found the back of the Stetson net and tied the match at 1-1 before the intermission.

In the second stanza, the Lipscomb offense came to life as the Bison held possession for much of the half. In the 68', 20 minutes before Bryneus tied the match, Lipscomb's Javanne Smith had a one-on-one breakaway opportunity but could not capitalize as his shot rang off the right woodwork. After a corner, Lipscomb found a second opportunity and this time the Bison netted it to take a 2-1 edge, but at the end of the night, it was Stetson that was victorious.

"It was awesome," said head coach Emmett Rutkowski. "It was really cool to see the guys so happy."

The Hatters upset victory on Saturday night was the first time in the 21st century that a Stetson men's soccer team downed a national top-25 team.

Stetson's men's soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 28 as the Hatters head to Statesboro, Ga. to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles in a non-conference bout. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
