Hatters top Georgia Southern on second-straight golden goal

Statesboro, Ga. -- In its second-straight overtime match, the Stetson University men's soccer team pulled one out of a hat Tuesday night as Nelson Pereira scored the golden goal in the second overtime period to top Georgia Southern on the road.

In what was the final minute of the second overtime period, Pereira headed out a Georgia Southern corner kick and then blocked an Eagles shot, deflecting it to Daniel Wintermeier. Wintermeier found Pereira up field for a three-on-two, Hatters advantage. Pereira found Ajmeer Spengler open in the middle, but the junior's initial shot was saved and deflected to Pereira who capitalized and netted the second chance shot to secure the victory for the Hatters.

The first half saw the Eagles (4-5-0) get out to a quick pace as Georgia Southern had three shot opportunities within the first 10 minutes of action while Stetson's lone first half shot came in the 18'. In the 34', Hatters keeper Jacob Gruber made a diving save on an Eagles penalty kick to keep the match scoreless heading into the break.

Coming out of the break, the Stetson offense came to life and in the 51minute after a corner kick, the Hatters put pressure on the Eagles defense with two shots, but nothing to show. Late in the half, the Eagles put the pressure on the Hatters defense with three shots in the final two minutes of regulation but could not find the back of the Stetson net.

The first overtime period saw more pressure from the Eagles offense as Georgia Southern had two shots on goal, but Gruber made the save both times, sending the match to a second overtime where Pereira played hero for the Hatters.

"We wanted to defend and be patient and find opportunities going forward," said head coach Emmett Rutkowski. "They were a tough team and it was good to get a shutout on the road."

The Hatters were outshot 16-6 on the night and Gruber was 7-for-7 in save opportunities, with his biggest coming on the Eagles penalty kick. Pereira's goal was his fourth of the season and the second golden goal in as many matches for the Hatters.

Stetson's men's soccer team returns to ASUN Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 2 as the Hatters play host to Jacksonville. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
