Hatters top EKU, sweep quick two-match homestand

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University women's soccer team won its second straight ASUN Conference match Sunday afternoon as the Hatters shutout Eastern Kentucky 2-0 at home.

In the first half of action, the two sides matched one another as both offenses put pressure on the opposition's defense from the opening kick. The Hatters (5-5-1, 2-0-0) found opportunities in the ninth and 10th minutes but both shots were saved by the Colonel keeper. EKU responded with three shots on goal but Hatters keeper Sarah Grimmett kept the match scoreless with three saves.

In the 32' minute, Danielle Shahin took a Hatters corner and found Lea Alexander in the EKU box. On one touch, Alexander found Georgia Place who tapped the pass in and found the back of the Colonel net to give the Hatters a 1-0 edge headed to intermission.

After the break, the Colonels (4-6-0, 0-2-0) held possession for much of the second stanza, but the Stetson defense proved to be too much for EKU as it was unable to create any scoring opportunities. In the 84', a Hatters free kick found Jordan Ross down field who found a hustling Chloe Washington on the left side for a one-on-one opportunity with the EKU keeper. The sophomore beat the Colonels keeper and found the lower right corner of the net to put the Hatters on top 2-0, icing Stetson's second straight win.

"Conference is about fighting, and you saw momentum moments in the game, they took advantage of the opportunities, and it was a great day for a W," said head coach Chris Bergmann after Sunday's win.

Stetson outshot EKU 16-12 on the afternoon in an evenly contested match. Ross had three shots for the Hatters while Place, Alexander and Gabby Padilla each had two. Grimmett recorded her second shutout and Stetson's fifth on the year.

Stetson's women's soccer team will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 30 as the Hatters travel to Florence, Ala. to take on the North Alabama Lions in another ASUN Conference match. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. EST.
