Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Athletics Communications

Hatters fall to North Alabama on the road

Florence, Ala. -- The Stetson University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to North Alabama Thursday night on the road in a hard-fought ASUN Conference battle.
 
The Hatters (5-6-1, 2-1-0) were slow out of the gate in the first half as the North Alabama defense kept the Stetson offense at bay and did not allow a Hatters shot in the first 45 minutes of action. Through the first 40 minutes, the Lions (2-8-2, 1-2-0) only had four shots, but on their fifth one in the 41', Grace Lensing netted a ball off a corner kick from Kate Wiseman to put UNA up 1-0 before the intermission. 
 
The second half saw the Stetson offense come to life as the Hatters outshot the Lions 12-5 with three on frame. After a barrage of shots throughout the half but nothing to show, the Hatters found an opportunity in the 73'. Chloe Washington dribbled up field and crossed a pass into the Lions box but it was deflected to Sanna Widstrom by the UNA keeper and Widstrom found the lower right corner of the empty net to knot the match at 1-1. 

Then in the 89', the Lions' Zoe Ellis chipped one over the Head of Hatters keeper Ashleigh Wise and found the back of the Stetson net. The Hatters quickly moved the ball up field but were unable to answer in the final seconds. 
 
Kyleigh Thelen and Washington each had three shots to lead the Hatters offense. Widstrom's goal was the first of the season for junior from Sweden.
 
The Stetson women's soccer team will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 3 as the Hatters travel back to Alabama to face the Jacksonville State Gamecocks and continue their ASUN Conference schedule. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
