Garrett Nickel Named Assistant Softball Coach at Stetson

DeLand, Fla. -- Former Team USA Junior Men's Fastpitch pitcher and Athletes Unlimited facilitator Garrett Nickel has been named an assistant softball coach at Stetson University, Hatters' head coach Shellie Robinson announced on Thursday. He will serve as the program's pitching coach.

"We are so excited to have Garrett here at Stetson," Robinson said. "I believe that he will bring a lot of energy, knowledge and experience to our program and to our pitchers specifically. He has had so many opportunities to be around highly successful programs and athletes in just a short amount of time. His experience at Arizona State University and with Athletes Unlimited in Chicago will undoubtedly help elevate his career in the coaching world. I look forward to getting him in our bullpens and in our Stetson green."

Nickel comes to Stetson after serving two years on staff with the Arizona State University softball program. While with the Sun Devils, Nickel helped plan team travel, tournaments and other logistical items. He worked with the ASU and NCAA compliance offices and helped prepare film and team scouting reports.

This past summer, Nickel served as a facilitator for the Athletes Unlimited softball league in Rosemont, Ill.  He worked directly with the country's top softball athletes to put together lineups and game strategies. He also served as a pitching coach and mental performance coach.

"I am so excited to get started at Stetson University with coach Robinson and her staff," Nickel said. "The vision for the program represents so many of my core personal values, and I absolutely believe in the culture that has already been created. I have been extremely fortunate to be surrounded by passionate mentors and coaches throughout my career.  I cannot wait to use that experience to impact the fantastic athletes here at Stetson. This program has a long history of success, and I am thrilled for the opportunity to coach in a community that loves women's athletics and Hatter Softball."

Nickel is a member of Team USA Softball and competed for the 2018 Junior Men's Fastpitch National Team, where he participated in the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Junior Men's World Championship.  He also founded Explosion Club Softball in Phoenix, Ariz., a non-profit organization for competitive youth softball.

A native of Clarksville, Tenn., Nickel earned his Bachelor's Degree in Community Sports Business and Management from Arizona State University in 2021.

Robinson completed her coaching staff for the 2022 season by tabbing former Hatter Riley Russell as a volunteer assistant coach.  Russell played in all 108 games for the Hatters from 2019-21 and ranked seventh in school history with 71 career stolen bases.

The Hatters will open the season with the Stetson Lead-Off Classic, Feb. 11-13 at Patricia Wilson Field.
