Hatters Edged by Kennesaw State, 61-60

DeLand, Fla. -- In a bizarre finish where no one seemed sure if the game was over, Kennesaw State held on for a 61-60 victory over Stetson Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (8-9, 1-3 ASUN) trailed 61-57 when Khamya McNeal hit a corner 3 with just 1.6 seconds remaining to pull Stetson within one.

Kennesaw State (5-9, 1-2 ASUN) called timeout and advanced the ball to midcourt. Jah'Che Whitfield's errant in-bounds pass was grabbed by Tatiana Streun, who was then knocked down by Whitfield attempting to retrieve the loose ball as time expired. After a brief conference among the three officials, the game was ruled over.

It marked the second straight game Stetson rallied from a second-half deficit to pull within one possession. Saturday, The Hatters trailed by 11 at the half and by nine with 3:27 to go in the third quarter when Yazz Wazeerud-Din buried a 3 and Alyssa Hargrove scored off a pass from Jamiya Turner to cut the deficit to four.  Kennesaw State led 40-37 after 3.

In the fourth quarter, the Owls rebuilt an 8-point lead with 6:51 to play, but the Hatters battled back.  Maddie Novak's triple from the wing made it a 47-44 game with 5:32 to go.  The Owls answered that run to push the lead back to seven.  With 1:14 left, Amani Johnson hit a 3-pointer for Kennesaw State, but Wazeerud-Din quickly answered with a 3-point play with exactly 1 minute remaining to cut the deficit back down to three.

A Gabi Legister bucket and a Johnson free throw put KSU back up by six.  The Owls still led by four until the final sequence.

Streun finished with a game-high 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting.  It was her sixth straight game in double figures and the 50th double-figure scoring game of her career. She is averaging 18.0 ppg in ASUN play.

McNeal added a career-high 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting, which included a pair of 3-pointers.

Whitfield led the Owls with 15 points.

Both teams shot over 40 percent from the floor.  Stetson held a 36-32 edge on the glass and a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint.  KSU hit eight 3-pointers.

Stetson will host 23rd-ranked
FGCU at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
