Hatters get set to host FGCU on Tuesday

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team gets set for another ASUN Conference contest at the Edmunds Center as the Hatters host the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Recap
Stetson comes off another tough Atlantic Sun Conference loss as the Hatters fell 77-49 to Kennesaw State back on Jan. 15. Chase Johnston led all scorers on the night as the sophomore tallied 16 points and extended his double figure scoring streak to nine games in a row. Christiaan Jones recorded his second double-double of the season as the Columbia, S.C. native finished with 12 points and 11 boards. As a team, Stetson shot 33.3 percent on the night and only scored 14 points in the second half.

Scouting the Eagles
Florida Gulf Coast enters Tuesday's contest with an 11-7 overall record but is 1-3 in ASUN Conference action. The Eagles have lost three straight ASUN matchups after defeating North Florida back on Jan. 5. On Jan. 8, Jacksonville topped FGCU 69-66 on a near half-court shot, and then five days later, Kennesaw State topped the Eagles 77-53. Then on Saturday, the Eagles were edged 78-75 by Liberty at home.

The Eagles are led by one of the top scorers in NCAA Division I this season as Tavian Dunn-Martin has averaged 19.1 points per game on the year. Cyrus Largie and Kevin Samuel follow Dunn-Martin with 11.1 and 11.0 points per game respectively. As a team, the Eagles shoot 44.8 percent from the field, good for sixth in the conference, and 35.0 percent from beyond the arc, good for fifth.

All-Time Series
Tuesday night's game will be the 33rd time the Hatters and the Eagles have squared off, dating back to 2008. Stetson is 10-22 all-time against FGCU, but it was the Hatters that got the best of the Eagles in their last meeting, coming out on top with a 77-66 road victory back on Jan. 30, 2021. Rob Perry delivered a 30-point performance in the win while Johnston added 20 of his own.

Scouting the Hatters
Stetson enters Tuesday's contest with a 7-10 overall record and is 1-3 in ASUN Conference action. Since the start of the new year, the Hatters have lost three of their last four, including their last two in a row.

Despite missing the last two games, Rob Perry continues to be the Hatters leading scorer as the junior is averaging 15.9 points per game. Johnston's 16-point performance against KSU propelled the sophomore to 13.0 points per game. Meanwhile, Jones has remained consistent and averages 12.0 points per game. As a team, the Hatters shoot 42.9 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from beyond the arc. Stetson's average of 66.8 points per game are the least number of points per game for an ASUN team this year.

Looking Ahead
After Stetson hosts FGCU, it gets set for its first cross-divisional contest as the Hatters travel to North Alabama on Saturday, Jan. 22. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
