Hatters fall 93-91 to FGCU in OT thriller

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team dropped its third contest in a row Tuesday night as Stetson fell 93-91 in a competitive, overtime battle against Florida Gulf Coast at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (7-11, 1-4) fell behind early as the Eagles (12-7, 2-3) opened the game on a 6-0 run and forced an early Stetson timeout. Josh Smith quickly got the Hatters back into the ballgame with five straight points as the sophomore hit a jumper in the paint and a 3-point field goal to make it a 6-5 game. Over the next six minutes, FGCU went on a 16-4 run and took a 22-9 lead with 10:06 remaining in the first half. Stetson eventually cut its deficit to 35-29, but FGCU went on a 12-3 run to end the half, capped off by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Austin Richie as the Hatters never held a lead in the opening stanza.

The Hatters offense had a resurgence in the second half as Christiaan Jones led an 8-0 Stetson run, scoring the first three baskets of the half, followed by a Stephan Swenson bucket to cut the Eagles lead to 47-40. Stetson never let its deficit get to double digits in the second half as the Hatters slowly cut into the FGCU lead. After a 3-pointer from Chase Johnston got the Hatters within three, a Swenson triple knotted the game at 78 apiece with 2:07 left in regulation. With 1:30 remaining, a dunk from freshman Alvin Tumbin gave the Hatters their first lead of the game, but the Eagles retaliated with four straight points and FGCU's Kevin Samuel sent the game to overtime on a layup with 18 seconds left.

The overtime period began slow, but it was the Eagles that drew the first blow and took an 84-82 lead with 3:44 left. Tumblin quickly tied it at 84-84 and after three straight made free throws from Swenson and Smith, the Hatters held an 87-84 advantage with 2:26 left. FGCU retook the lead once again as the Eagles drew two straight fouls and sank all four free throws. Both squads traded free throws down the stretch but ultimately it was the Eagles that came out on top, 93-91.

Five Hatters recorded double figures as Tumblin led all Stetson scorers on the night with 22 points and grabbed nine boards. Jones tallied 18 points and brought down 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the year and second in as many games. Johnston put up 14 and extended his double figure scoring streak to 10 games in a row while Smith and Swenson finished with 18 and 16, respectively.

FGCU's Tavian Dunn-Martin led all scorers on night with 30 points, going 6-for-10 from beyond the arc.

The Stetson men's basketball team will be back on the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 22 as the Hatters travel to North Alabama for their first ASUN Western Division contest. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. EST and will be streamed on ESPN+.
