Jones' game winner leads Hatters past Lions

Florence, Ala. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team ended its three-game losing streak Saturday night as Christiaan Jones sank the game-winning layup to lead the Hatters to a 67-65 win over North Alabama at Flowers Hall.

With 1:00 remaining in regulation, the Hatters (8-11, 2-4) held a 63-55 advantage and in what was already a back-and-forth contest, the Lions (8-11, 1-5) staged a comeback. After two UNA free throws, it was a four-point game in favor of the Hatters. Then with 19 seconds left, UNA's Jamari Blackmon hit a 3-point field goal, making it a one-possession contest and then fourteen seconds later, Blackmon knotted the game at 65 apiece. With only five seconds left, the Hatters raced down the floor and Jones connected on the game-winning layup off a lob pass from sophomore Stephan Swenson, giving Stetson its second ASUN victory of the year.

Stetson opened the game on a quick 5-0 run as Josh Smith connected on both an alleyoop dunk and a 3-point field goal within the first minute of the contest. From there, the Lions went on a 12-0 run and took a 12-5 lead at the 14:20 mark. The Hatters slowly chipped away and eventually retook a 15-14 lead on two free throws from Alvin Tumblin. After taking the lead, Giancarlo Valdez sparked the Hatters offense with a 3-point field goal and Stetson continued to lead for the remainder of the half, taking a 30-28 lead into the break.

Out of intermission, the Lions opened the second half with a 13-5 run and took a 41-35 lead with 14:20 left in regulation. The Hatters again chipped away and from the 9:05 mark to the 1:43 mark, neither team had a lead greater than four until the Hatters took a 59-53 lead on a Swenson layup with 1:43 left. From there, the Hatters lead increased to eight on the Tumblin free throws, setting up the final minute of the game and Jones' buzzer-beating heroics.

Jones led all Hatters scorers with 16 points as the graduate went 6-for-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from the stripe. Tumblin and Swenson each cashed in 12 points while Swenson also added eight assists.

UNA's Jamari Blackmon led all scorers on the night as he posted 24 points for the Lions, going 4-for-5 from downtown.

The Stetson men's basketball team will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 27 as the Hatters host Bellarmine University for its second West Division contest. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
